 One Couple’s Testimony

“We had left our church in support of our pastor, who had been forced out in a heated church split.  We had only been saved five years and were pretty devastated by all that had gone on in our first church.  After hours of prayer, we decided we needed to find a new church and set out to find it, asking God for guidance.  It was like casting out to sea in a rowboat because of our inexperience.  During a six-month period we visited every church in town…at least all of those that had any vague reference to ‘Baptist’ and that supposedly taught the Bible and salvation.  We came home empty and disappointed so many times.  What we were fed seemed like so much marshmallow compared to the strong preaching we had sat under.

“The day we came to Buckley Road we looked at each other on the way home in the car.  ‘That’s the kind of preaching I’ve been looking for,’ my husband said.  I was in total agreement; I had felt ‘home’ the moment I had walked through the door.  In the weeks that followed we attended every service.  There were some adjustments:  We had not had an altar call at our first church and kneeling for prayer on Wednesday nights scared me a little.  I had attended several masses with my Mother-in-law and had finally decided I would not go through the meaningless up-and-down on the knees.  We came to appreciate the chance for public acceptance of salvation and on-the-spot response to the pressing of the Holy Spirit that the altar call offers.  After a few prayer meetings I began to recognize the genuine humility and position of reverence expressed by prayer on the knees.  It was not just for show.

“What finally assured us in our decision, though, were the visits we received.  Our house is not that easy to find, but it was found.  The Pastor himself came to visit bringing with him a tall, lanky young man who grinned and introduced himself as the leader of Children’s Ministries.  With two young children and a baby, I had plans to ask to serve in the children’s club and Sunday School, so it was great to meet him.  Later Pastor’s wife and an officer’s wife came to visit, too.  We were warmed by this personal attention and soon joined BRBC.  That was 19 years ago.
